Aims & Curriculum

Inside Swan Nursery

The main aim of the nursery is to provide a happy and caring learning environment for pre-school children. We believe that every child should start their education in a fun and friendly way, gradually learning new skills that build self-confidence and increase awareness of the world around them.

The development of mathematics and language are key features of the curriculum but music, art and craft as well as physical skills have an important place too. A thematic approach is used for the development of science, geography and history as one must appreciate that young children do not see the world according to subject areas! Electronic aids, tape recorder and computers are used by the children to enhance their learning and enjoyment.

A typical session at the Nursery might be as follows:-

Free activities
Sharing books and stories
Number and language games/snack time
Activities outside
Group music time
Group story time
Puzzles and construction activities

During the free activity time the children are free to choose their own play. A wide range of construction toys are available as well as toys for imaginative play - for example the farm with farm animals and vehicles, the railway and airport, roadways with cars and other vehicles etc. There is a home corner with dressing up clothes and often other role-play activities are introduced - for example a shop, hospital or hairdresser. Books, puzzles, sand, water, painting, drawing, modelling and other art and craft activities are available for the children to choose. During this free play time, if it appropriate, the older or more mature children also take part in short pre-reading, pre-writing or number activities which are adult directed.

For most of the school day we maintain a ratio of one staff to five children or better.
